Description

The kaskamelan is an idiophone struck in an indirect way.

Description of the instrument

It is a half of coconut shell. It has a recess at one end. It has a stick or small board attached with a twisted rope, well taut, holding the small board against the coconut shell.

Way of playing

By pushing the stick or the small board down with a finger, it hits the coconut shell when it returns to its initial position, thus producing the sound. If you place a small board instead of the stick, it produces a bigger sound.

History

In the Ribera region in Navarra this type of percussion instrument was played to rhythmically accompany the songs (Beltran, 1996, p. 46).

WORKSHOP

After emptying a coconut, one half of the skin is taken and a piece is removed at one end.

On top, along the , a small board is placed that is held with a thread, taut against the coconut skin.

Once the thread is tightened, the kaskamelan can be played.
