The danborra/tambor (drum) belongs to the membranophone group.

Description of the instrument

The cylindrical brass drum has usually accompanied the dulzaina-gaita players. Like the atabal used by the txistularis groups, the drum also has two membranes and a rope tensioning . A string (bordón) made of gut or other material is placed against the lower skin to modify and increase the sound of the instrument.

Way of playing

The interpreter plays with two drumsticks (palos), with great dexterity, producing rolls and rhythmic games that enrich and embellish the music.

History

These instruments, d in many ways, have given rhythmic support to the dulzaina-gaita players for years.

Although many times we see a dulzainero-gaitero accompanied by a drum, the most frequent group is made up of two dulzaineros (playing duo) and a drummer.

Taking into account the loudness of the instruments it accompanies, the drum is usually loud. Its performances are usually rhythmically rich, and very pleasant to listen to.

Sometimes the drum known as caja is used to accompany the dulzaina-gaita groups. It can be seen today mainly accompanying Biscayan dulzaineros.
