Description

Hands can be considered as idiophones, since clapping rhythmically can accompany music.

Way of playing

The sound is produced by tapping the palms of the hands against each other.

History

The palms are used in some songs and dances to mark the rhythm of the music, for example, in the dances known as "Esku-dantza". In them, the dancer slaps his hands and those of the other dancers. Father Donostia (1952) includes hands in the group of idiophones in his article on Basque instruments (p. 296).
