Description

Kerrika is the that has been given to the sound of the axle of the wheels of the cart. It can be considered as a rubbed idiophone.

Way of playing

When the cart is running, it sounds with the friction that occurs when turning the shaft, emitting rhythmic phrases.

History

The noise made by the cart axle has been called kerrika and karranka. It is not known whether or not it had a musical function, but Father Donostia included it in the list of sound instruments of the Basque Country (Aita Donostia, 1952, p. 294).
