Description
Spoons are idiophones struck in a non-direct way.
Description of the instrument
Although metal spoons have been used, the most common are wooden ones. To achieve a good sound, they are often made of boxwood.
Way of playing
The two spoons, held in one hand with their backs to each other, placing the index finger the two, are shaken and struck against the thigh and against the other hand placed on top. They can also be held and shaken in the style of txaramelas.
History
The spoons have been used as a percussion instrument to rhythmically accompany song, especially in the performances that take place around meals. José Peña from the Sarobe farmhouse in the San Martín neighbourhood of Orio and José Mari Astiasaran from Villabona have n us well. In other places we have also collected information on this instrument and its use, among others, in the Goierri region of Gipuzkoa and in towns near Vitoria.
