Description

The triangle is a directly struck idiophone.

Description of the instrument

It is a metallic triangle, the two ends of which do not come together so that the instrument vibrates better. A metal rod is used to hit it.

Way of playing

With one hand the triangle is hung from a string and with the other the instrument is struck with the rod.

History

In many places this instrument is known as "hierros" or "fierros" (irons). In the registry of the 18th century Pamplona festivals collected by Jesús Ramos (1990), these musicians appear twice accompanying the guitar:

Andrés Beloqui (blind) - Guitar - Ibero - 1799 - The guide plays the irons.

Bernardo González (blind) - Guitar - Piedramillera - 1799 - The guide who accompanies him plays the irons (p. 103).

Today they are not used much in our popular music, but they can still be seen in groups such as the Auroros.
